This is a great place to get Korean food and Japanese food all in one seating. The Korean food is very traditional. I ordered the fish roe spicy soup. It was spicy yet a perfect amount of heat. The soup comes out super hot. The soup is so hot that it is served still boiling in the bowl. The soup is clean and to the point. The roe and fish really shines in this dish. As far as the sushi goes, I ordered from the a la cart sushi menu. I loved the eel the most. The eel sauce was savory with a sweet element. The eel was fatty and soft. The rice was fresh and seasoned to perfection. The rice is steamed and has a sweet back note and a tart undertone. They have a wide array of ban chan (Korean side dishes). The side dishes are fresh and it is clear they make their ban chan fresh on a daily basis. The service is quick and friendly.

My korean roommate is crazy about their hedupbap, this big bowl of just raw fish and lettuce. It truly is a big bowl, check out the pictures. It's like one of those communal soup bowls. If you're a fan of that dish, this is your place. For your friends who are dragged along and must order something to get through the meal, I recommend the yukgaejang, a spicy beef soup. It came with rice and was not too spicy. I also really liked their seafood pancake, it was crispy on the outside yet chewy-- perfect consistency and clean taste. I would probably not come here on my own because they are known for the hedupbap dish more than anything else it seems. All the ladies who ordered it liked it, so there you go.

I love hoe dup bap here as well as the seafood pancake. Doen jang soup is sort of fusion Japanese style and not authentic Koream, but soon dubu is spot on. The servers are friendly and the food comes out relatively fast.

Fantastic hwae dup bop, sushi and bulgogi. Friendly service, mom and pop feel, reasonable prices, prefer over Shin Chon for casual warm vibe.

This is truly a hiden gem. My go to place for Korean food, everything is authentic and the food taste great, feel like I am in Korea. The service is phenomenal. My favorite dish is hwe dup bap (sashimi/ caviar and rice) the fish taste very fresh and clean, this is the only sashimi I would eat. I enjoyed eating all the side dishes too.

This place is amazing ! It's a hole in the wall, but the food is always satisfying and fresh. I recommend the hwaedupbap and pajun!

Delicious spicy appetizers, great seafood dishes, & reasonable prices for the area. Also, real orientals dine there, so it must be authentic. My favorite is the Spicy seafood bowl, called something like O bok Jum

We've been eating here for 10 years. The food was very good but the entrees have become inconsistent. The side dishes are fantastic. The place is clean though it could use some updating and maintenance, the owner values his customers and keeps a very peaceful concern going (never heard any yelling from the kitchen even if a dish fell), and the prices are reasonable. Due to the inconsistency of the entrees I'm dropping my rating from 4 to 3 stars. If they pick up the pace I'll move it back up.

I've been a customer here for a while now and I really like it. The sushi man is extremely nice and the waitstaff very friendly. Although sometimes the restaurant is understaffed so you may not get the best service. This is great for families and groups. They give free lollipops to children after your meal. :) The food here is really good. It has a homemade feel to it and the sushi is fresh. I recommend the hwedupbap (sashimi rice) and maeuntang (spicy cod soup). They also have tempura ice cream which is awesome. It's a small restaurant in a hidden area but it is definitely worth it! It's been open for over a dozen of years now (I think) and has many regulars. I highly recommend the place and hope to return soon!

Very tasty and good service. We ordered bimbapbob, spicy pork, bulgogi and several appetizers and enjoyed it all. The little bowls of condiments and California roll, unagi maki all very good. Prices were reasonable for dinner with good size portions. We will be back.

A small, real hole in the wall Korean-Japanese restaurant. I go here for home style Korean dishes rather than their sushi/ sashimi/ rolls. Even though I'm not a fan of the dish, they are well known for their hwae dup bap (korean version of chirashi served with red pepper paste on the side for mixing). It is HUGE. Their sushi would fall under average in my book. They have a limited Korean menu but almost all of them are very tasty. Only thing to avoid would be soon-dubu. They have excellent pa jun and yook gae jang. I'm not a big fan of yook gae jang in general but one of us will usually order this dish. It might very well be the best yook gae jang I've tried. Dumpling soup, fish casserole, and jap chae are all good choices also. The service here is better than most Korean restaurants. Most of their Korean menu items are $10 or higher unless you order half portion size. For a hole in the wall, slightly cheaper pricing would be a better fit. Across the street there is Rita's if you want dessert afterward.

A bit pricey for a college kid, but super solid korean pancake. We go here all the time

The food was just okay and the sushi wasn't terrible, but what surprised me was the lack of professionalism at this restaurant. While eating, I saw the two waitresses sitting, having a beer with soju (Korean alcohol). There were still plenty of people in the restaurant and it was still over an hour until closing. I can understand drinking when you're closed up for the night, but while you're still open? The service suffered as a result. It's hard to trust a restaurant that allows their waitresses to drink while working.

Bad news...I think I am done with this one. I probably have ordered take out here about 10 times. Lately I am having a sanitation issue. I started looking around...really looking and I saw unclean floors, and overall it's just below average. Even when you walk in, the front door barely opens and is always dirty. Not really a good first impression. Oh well...back to Yama Sushi.

Casual Korean fare, pretty quiet, quick service. The food isn't mind-blowingly off the charts, but it serves the purpose when you're craving some sushi or Korean food.

I tried their hwe du bap and wasn't such a big fan of it. While it was okay and it had all the essentials, I found the ratio of ingredients were a bit off. I prefer the Shin Chon or Lotte Food Court version to be a bit better. I did like that the Hansung had shredded their greens quite nicely, but the ratio of vegetables, fish, rice, and tobiko was a bit funky. The large serving of hwe du bap is accompanied with a miso soup (a tad on the salty side, but still edible). I did like the banchan here, generous and tasty.

The cold is coming, and you should start looking for warm dinners to get you through. Yuk gae jang is a Korean beef soup perfect for your winter, and I followed Ji K.'s advice here to Han Sung Restaurant in Ellicott City. Han Sung is a small casual restaurant just south of Rte 40. Many of the people coming through were eating sushi or tempura. But there is a small variety of homestyle Korean food, and I'm looking to eat beyond the barbecue and the Korean-Chinese noodles that I love. Yuk gae jang is a bowl thick with shredded flank steak, scallions and noodles in a red-tinged broth. The soup has a spicy zest, but it's not the fiery flavor that you can get in some Korean dishes. It's a filling dish. The beef cooked tender. The noodles soak up the broth. On the side you get a metal container of rice, which you spoon into the bowl and adds a nice heartiness. Han Sung doesn't have the panache of Shin Chon Garden, which is our repeat joint for Korean. But we're trying new spots. They put out a nice table of vegetable panchan, and it seems like the right place for a dinner of soup and sushi. One note: Ask for the main dish serving of yuk gae jung ($11). It's in English on the takeout menu, but the regular menu lists the main dish soups only in Korean. Next time, we'll try the mandu gook -- dumplings in a beef broth -- or the seafood pancakes.

Been eating here for over 10 years!! Love this place more then any other Korean and/or Japanese food! Everything we order is wonderful. Starting with the best miso soup, wonderful green salad, fresh sushi, amazing kimchi and side dishes along with great seafood pancake! Just writing about it makes me want to go right now :)

I've always wondered about this place, but it definitely lives in the shadow of the other Korean restaurants in the Ellicott City area. I ordered a hwe dup bap () at the recommendation of the friend I was eating with for $14.95. We had a nice little set of banchan (side dishes) brought out and each of us got a bowl of miso soup with our hwe dup bap (listed as "hae dub bob" in the menu). The portion was very big, I was no where near finishing it in my sitting. It was very good, too. Fresh sashimi and yummy sauce. I wish there was maybe a bit more rice at the bottom, but I liked it a lot. Our server was also very nice to us. I like this place, but it's a bit pricey for me and when there are other options, I don't know if this would be at the top of my choices. But I would definitely come back to see what else they have to offer.

I can't give it five stars because I haven't had anything on the menu except for the HweDup Bop. But it is by far the yummiest HweDup Bop I've ever had. Everywhere else I go I compared it to this place. And so far not has ever stood up to it. Not even close.

I stumbled on this restaurant quite by accident, looking for a place to eat in Ellicott City. The strip mall/office complex location is unassuming, and the decor isn't up to much, but it was a great place to get my "tempura fix." Shrimp and veg tempura was plentiful and tasty. The shrimp tempura roll was also very good. Service was excellent, and the price was reasonable. Don't let the lacklustre location and ambiance put you off.

Service is SO nice. They are so good to my little baby! I have been eating at this restaurant for 15 years or so. Their chab chae (great without beef if you're vegetarian) if the best ever, in my book. The potato side dish is world class.
